Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) to enhance your understanding of yourself and those around you and use the information gained to be even more successful.
The MBTI is based on the personality type theory of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. Isabel Briggs and Katharine Myers took Jungs' work, developed it, and made it more accessible by developing, ultimately, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.
The current MBTI is one of the most widely used instrument for explaining normal differences in human personality. It explains basic patterns of human functioning and can be used, as a result, for may purposes such as:
Self-understanding and development
Organisation development
Team building
Problem solving
Career development
Improving communication
Some of the aspects of the MBTI which invaluable are that, not only is it 'self-reported', it is entirely non-judgmental and is really well validated as psychological tool. In MBTI terms type can be expressed as preferences between four dichotomies, each of which has two poles of opposite preferences
The dichotomies are based on opposite ways of
using energy,
taking in information,
using the information gained and
relating to the world around us.
We all use both poles of each dichotomy to some extent but it is often the case that we will find one pole of each to be more comfortable and natural. Thus the interplay of each dichotomy within ourselves creates a unique personal type. The process of discovering your 'type' is a hugely enjoyable process which sometimes is very revealing. The insight and understanding that you gain from such a fantastic, non-judgemental tool is enormously useful in everyday life.
